Welcome to G6TW South Cheshire Amateur Radio Society

If you are interested in joining or visiting the club, or wish to find out more about amateur radio, please come and visit us on a club night, or click here to contact us. Meetings take place on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month. On the first, Third & Fifth (if applicable) Wednesday we operate a ‘SKED’ – or local radio network – on the 2m VHF band (144-146MHz).

South Cheshire Amateur Radio Society provides a focal point for amateur radio enthusiasts across the South Cheshire and North Staffordshire regions, including; Crewe, Nantwich, Sandbach, Middlewich, Wybunbury, Talke, Kidsgrove and further afield. We have a current membership of around 25, from teens to retired, and from a rich and diverse range of backgrounds. Our experience varies from operators new to the hobby, to operators with many decades of experience. Amateur radio is a huge subject area, going far beyond simply ‘talking on a radio’; data modes, QRP low-power operation, mobile operation, antenna design, packet radio, internet radio, software-defined radio, CW operation (aka ‘Morse Code’), HF, VHF, UHF and microwave, homebrew equipment, cover just a few of the areas covered; and no matter what the area, someone in the club probably has experience in it.

The club promotes a friendly, social atmosphere for members and visitors alike. Club facilities include a permanent ‘radio shack’ at the meeting venue, with HF and VHF radio equipment. We have a dedicated field shack – the caravan – located near Leighton, used for competitions and general operating in an environment with low levels of background electrical noise. The site is equipped with multiple HF antennas for operating on from 10-160m.

Club activities include fox hunts, antenna construction, talks and presentations. Club nights consist of a quick formal meeting to discuss club business such as forthcoming activities and events, before breaking into an informal atmosphere for a talk, presentation, training, etc. Members are invited to suggest activities and subjects they would like to see covered, and give presentations on subjects of interest; we are very much ‘user-driven’. Meetings are very friendly, sociable, and are a great opportunity to meet new people and enjoy a shared interest in the hobby.

SCARS participate in a number of radio events and contests, including various ‘On the Air’ special events, where we operate stations out in the field or from churches, museums, railways and other places of interest. Like many other clubs we have social events, including an annual Christmas meal where members’ partners are encouraged to attend.
